WHAT IS ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY?

Orthognathic surgery, or corrective jaw surgery, refers to a number of surgical procedures designed to straighten or realign your jaw bones.  Orthognathic surgery is undertaken to address a range of skeletal and dental problems that affect the function of the face and jaws. The aim of surgery is to improve the ability to chew, speak, and breathe, and restore balance to the teeth, jaws and facial structures.  

WHAT CONDITIONS CAN BE TREATED?

There are a range of conditions that can be improved by orthognathic surgery, such as:

• Retrusive lower jaw and chin (overbite)

• Protruding lower jaw (reverse bite)

• Open bite

• Facial asymmetry, or unbalanced facial shape

Orthognathic surgery usually requires a team approach by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and Orthodontist. Both specialists will work together to evaluate your teeth, jaws, mouth, and face, and closely coordinate your care. Your orthodontist has an essential role in preparing your teeth for surgery, and ensuring a functional and stable bite after the operation is complete. 

HOW MUCH DOES ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY COST?

The cost of orthognathic surgery includes several different fees: the surgeon fee is between $7000 to $12000 depending on the type of surgery. There is a partial Medicare rebate for the surgeon fee. There is also an anaesthetic fee and private hospital fee, most of which are covered by Medicare and Private Health insurance (if you are adequately insured). These fees are in addition to any orthodontic fees.
